Logan Gilbert 2023 Player Outlook: Excellent Sophomore Season But Pump The Brakes On A Repeat
2 years agoLogan Gilbert excelled for the Mariners in 2022, helping them reach the postseason for the first time in over 20 years. In 32 starts (185.2 IP), Gilbert had a 13-6 W-L record, 3.20 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 174 Ks. It was all the more impressive given Gilbert hadn't topped 135.0 IP in a year before 2022 since being drafted. But there are a couple of warning signs which should temper expectations somewhat. Gilbert had a 4.11 xERA, 3.78 xFIP and 3.84 SIERA while his 45.6% HardHit% ranked in the fifth percentile. We also saw a decrease in his strikeouts from 2021, with a 22.7% K% in 2022 down from 25.4%, and an increase in walks with a 6.4% BB% up from 5.6% BB%. But it's not all bad news for Gilbert's outlook this year as he was able to increase his GB% from 33.4% to 37.8% last year and dropped his FB% from 32.8% to 26.4%. Gilbert is still only 25 years old so there's reason to believe he can still improve and grow as a pitcher. Even if his ERA regresses near to his underlying numbers, Gilbert will still be a very solid option in fantasy but with an ADP of ~114 (30th starting pitcher), there's little upside to be had in 2023.
