Jesus Luzardo 2023 Outlook: Overlooked Breakout Season Leads To High Upside In The Later Rounds
2 years agoMiami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo comes into 2023 on the back of a breakout season in 2022, one where he firmly cemented himself as a part of the Marlins rotation. He only produced four wins for the lowly fish, but finished with solid numbers otherwise, posting a 3.32 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 120 strikeouts over 100 ⅓ IP. Although all four of his pitches were effective, he especially leaned into his dominant curveball last season, making it his primary pitch and using it at a 30.1% clip. His 30.0% K rate and 88th percentile Whiff% show how dominant his stuff is, and if he continues to use all of his pitches effectively there is no reason why he can't continue his success on the mound in 2023. His FIP and xERA, at 3.12 and 3.39 respectively, show that he deserved his stellar numbers last year and that the breakout wasn't just a fluke. He isn't likely to win many games, but he should remain solid otherwise. The 25-year-old still has room to grow, and even if he just repeats last season he will be well worth his ADP (150.4).
