Rafael Devers Extension Is Boston's Top Priority
2 years agoThe Boston Red Sox's No. 1 priority this offseason is giving third baseman Rafael Devers a long-term contract extension, according to sources. "They have to give him whatever he wants," one baseball executive said. "Can they really let him go, too?" The Red Sox attempted to re-sign shortstop Xander Bogaerts this offseason, but he ended up darting to the San Diego Padres for 11 years and $280 million. Boston were offering Devers in the mid-$200 million range, but now his $300 million asking price seems reasonable at four years younger than Bogaerts. The 26-year-old Devers is one of the best all-around hitters in the game. He made his second straight All-Star squad in 2022 and hit .295/.358/.521 with an .879 OPS, 27 home runs, 88 RBI, 84 runs scored and three stolen bases in 614 plate appearances over 141 games.
