Tom Brady Injury Update
For those that believed Tom Brady was absent from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to being on The Masked Singer, your dreams are likely crushed. The future Hall of Fame quarterback returned to practice earlier this week and it doesn't appear he was doing television during his time away from the team.
Before Brady returned to practice, Todd Bowles and the Buccaneers were mum on why the veteran signal-caller wasn't with the team. Ahead of Tampa Bay's preseason finale versus the Indianapolis Colts, it was revealed that Brady would get some preseason reps.
There was some concern that the 45-year-old quarterback wouldn't be back with the Buccaneers in time for their Week 1 bout with the Dallas Cowboys. While Tampa Bay has multiple injuries in the interior of their offensive line, Brady should remain a QB1 in his 23rd season in the NFL.
Jameis Winston Injury Update
Jameis Winston is coming off a torn ACL from a season ago, but he's been practicing during training camp. The former first-round pick has also dealt with a foot injury in training camp, however, he could be active for the New Orleans Saints in their preseason finale versus the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Saints have gradually increased the workload for Winston in practice leading up to the regular season. Even if Winston does suit up in the preseason finale, he likely won't play more than a couple of series just to get acclimated to taking snaps in a live game again.
The 28-year-old quarterback is expected to have a plethora of weapons in Michael Thomas, Chris Olave, Jarvis Landry, and Alvin Kamara this season. That being said, it seems as if Thomas is dealing with a hamstring injury after returning from an ankle injury that has caused him issues in recent seasons.
Darren Waller Injury Update
The Darren Waller situation is an interesting one as the regular season approaches. Despite returning to practice recently following a hamstring ailment, the athletic tight end is now absent from practice again and his status for Week 1 is up in the air.
The Pro Bowl tight end missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury and it appears that it is still causing him issues. The Las Vegas Raiders continue to say they aren't concerned with the injury, however, these types of injuries can be tricky as they can linger throughout the season.
Even with the addition of Davante Adams, Waller should remain a main fixture in the Raiders' offense as long as he's healthy. For those that are taking the 29-year-old tight end as their TE1 for the 2022 campaign, you may want to get a somewhat reliable TE2 just in case Waller misses some time to begin the season.
Logan Thomas Injury Update
The Washington Commanders recently activated Logan Thomas from the PUP list and they are easing him back into action. The veteran tight end took part in seven-on-seven drills earlier this week and his teammates were clearly excited to have him back on the field.
Thomas suffered a torn ACL, torn MCL, and damage to his meniscus last season with the Commanders. After missing most of Washington's offseason programs, the Virginia Tech product is ramping up his workload in training camp to prepare him for the regular season.
It remains to be seen if Thomas can play in Week 1 versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, but it's a positive sign to see him on the field again. While returning from multiple torn ligaments in your knee is not ideal, Thomas could be worth taking a flier on in the later rounds with a quarterback in Carson Wentz that loves to target tight ends.
Irv Smith Jr. Injury Update
Irv Smith Jr. suffered a thumb injury that required surgery earlier this offseason. The Alabama product returned to practice earlier this week, potentially making it clear that he'll be active for the Minnesota Vikings' Week 1 showdown with the Green Bay Packers.
After missing all of last season with a torn meniscus, Smith is expected to receive an expanded role in Minnesota's new-look offense. Kevin O'Connell, the former offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams and new head coach of the Vikings, has talked highly of the former second-round pick all offseason.
Justin Jefferson, Dalvin Cook, and Adam Thielen are expected to be the primary weapons for the Vikings this season. But with Minnesota projected to throw the ball more, Smith could be in line for a career-best year if he can remain healthy.
