Giovanny Gallegos Moving To Lower-Leverage Role
2 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals skipper Oliver Marmol said he wants to use relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos in lower-leverage situations for a few games so that he can work out a few issues, specifically against left-handed hitters. The idea is for Gallegos to build up more conviction in these spots before ideally moving him back into a late-inning role as a co-closer with Ryan Helsley. The 30-year-old right-hander has been hit hard lately, and his swing-and-miss rate and strikeout percentage against lefties are much lower than his career averages. Gallegos has a 3.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 10 saves and 47 K's in 36 innings this year, but left-handed hitters have a .310 average (18-for-58) against him with four home runs in 2022. Helsley should see all of the save situations in the near future with Gallegos working out his issues.
