Jerick McKinnon 2022 NFL Player Outlook: Insurance For Edwards-Helaire?
2 years agoKansas City Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon did not see much usage in his first season as a Chief. The former San Francisco 49er signed a one-year deal with Kansas City in 2021 and was brought back with a slight pay increase this past June. McKinnon is expected to make the 53-man roster, providing depth behind the newly acquired Ronald Jones and third-year running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Jones is set to take carries from the former first-round selection, while McKinnon could eat into Edwards-Helaire's target share. It will not be enough to make McKinnon a viable fantasy option consistently, but he is needed depth and insurance for Edwards-Helaire. CEH has missed 10 games during his first two seasons, and Jones has never been a threat as a pass catcher out of the backfield. Were CEH to miss time again in 2022, McKinnon would step in and take over as the passing-downs back. The former Georgia Southern prospect would become a flex option for fantasy managers replacing CEH, while Jones would remain the lead ball carrier. McKinnon is currently undrafted but will be a hot waiver pickup if CEH misses any time this year.
