Darrel Williams 2022 Outlook: Valuable Backup Moves to Another High-Octane Offense in Arizona
3 years agoAfter spending four years in Kansas City, Darrel Williams signed a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. He'll inevitably be the backup to James Conner, whom the Cardinals just signed to a three-year extension earlier in the offseason. From the numbers, it's clear Conner is the starter, but there could be room for Williams in a complementary role. Last season in Kansas City, he had a role even when Clyde Edwards-Helaire was healthy. He had nearly a 40% snap share playing alongside CEH, averaging 7.7 opportunities (5.4 rush attempts + 2.3 targets) per game. He scored three touchdowns in those 10 games. But his value skyrocketed when Edwards-Helaire missed time. Williams' snap share rose to 65% and he averaged 18.8 opportunities per game. That included five targets per game. That's where the value lies with Williams, as a pass-catcher. He's never been a great rusher of the football, averaging just 3.8 yards per carry in four seasons. But he's got great instincts as a receiver and thus can stay on the field in obvious passing situations and in negative game scripts. In the six games CEH missed, Williams averaged a whopping 19.1 PPR points per game. He may not have a ton of standalone value, but if Conner were to miss any time in 2022, he's shown an ability to fill in and handle a heavy workload. That could happen again in Arizona. The most desirable players in fantasy football are ones that play on fast-paced, high-octane offenses. Williams goes from a Kansas City team that averaged the fourth-most plays per game (67) to an Arizona team that averaged the eighth-most plays per game (65.6) last season. When thinking about the best backup running backs this draft season, make sure you don't forget about Darrel Williams.
