Travis Etienne 2022 Outlook: Pass-Catching Prowess Could Lead to Early Workhorse Role
3 years agoTravis Etienne missed his entire rookie season after suffering a Lisfranc injury during the preseason. The hype of him playing with his former college quarterback Trevor Lawrence was put on hold, but maybe for the better as Lawrence and the entire Jaguars team was a bit of a disaster last season under Urban Meyer. And now, the tables have turned, and Etienne is the healthy one while backfield mate James Robinson is recovering from an Achilles tear that he suffered in Week 16 last season. As a result, it'll be the former first-rounder with an inside track to a heavy workload come Week 1 of the 2022 season. Because of his ability as a pass-catcher, there's a chance he's a three-down back, especially early on. The Jaguars have done everything right this offseason as well, starting with bringing in a very solid head coach in Doug Pederson. They bolstered their offensive line by adding All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff and added pass-catchers Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, and Evan Engram to the fold. This offense is going to be much better than it was a season ago, which should bode well for Etienne. The most important nugget to assess Etienne's fantasy value is his ability as a receiver. At Clemson, he was utilized as such his junior year. However, the Tigers rarely played in close games and rarely lost. But, when they did play in close games (five of them), Etienne averaged 4.8 receptions for 70.5 yards and 0.5 touchdowns on 5.5 targets per game. The Jaguars had 74.5% of their plays while trailing in 2021 and according to PlayerProfiler, his best comparable is D'Andre Swift, who has seen 33.8% of his opportunities in the form of targets in his first two seasons. If Robinson misses a bunch of time, we could be looking at a top-15 finish from Etienne in 2022.
