Derrick Henry 2022 Outlook: Can the King Overcome Age and Efficiency Concerns?
3 years agoBetween 2018 and 2020, Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry was not only extremely productive, but he was also hyper-efficient. Per PlayerProfiler, he ranked top-5 in yards created per touch in two of those three seasons and averaged over 4.93 yards per carry (YPC) in all three. In his historic 2020 campaign, Henry ranked just 19th in yards created per touch, however, he more than made up for it by averaging a whopping 5.36 yards per carry across 378 carries. But 2021 was a different story for the King. He averaged just 4.28 yards per carry and ranked just 31st in yards created per touch before suffering a Jones fracture in Week 8. Incredibly, despite the relatively low YPC, Henry still finished as the overall RB1 on a per-game basis, averaging 23 half-PPR points per game thanks in large part to his massive workload (27.4 rush attempts per game) and 10 touchdowns. Looking ahead to 2022, Henry faces an uphill battle to repeat as one of the top fantasy running backs in the league. He's 28 years old, he suffered a foot injury last season, and the Titans traded away one of the league's best offensive weapons in A.J. Brown. Inevitably, they'll have a hard time repeating their success from last season when they went 12-5. As such, since Henry isn't highly involved in the passing game, he'll likely need to see another heavy workload to pay off at his high average draft position (ADP). He's not as much of a sure-fire top option in 2022 as he has been the last three or four seasons prior.
