Cole Sulser 2022 Player Outlook: Potential Saves Option For Improving Marlins Team
3 years agoThe Miami Marlins traded for Cole Sulser and Tanner Scott days before the season begins, with Sulser in the mix for late-innings work. Sulser didn't make his MLB debut until 2019, at the age of 29, and only had a total of 30.0 IP prior to 2021. But he impressed with the Orioles last season over 63.1 IP having a 2.70 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 28.4% K%. Sulser found himself as the Orioles closer late in the season and ended the year with eight saves and a 5-4 W-L record. His underlying numbers support his breakout but do suggest some regression might be on the cards. In 2021, Sulser had a 3.17 xERA, 3.74 xFIP and 3.45 SIERA while his 8.9% BB% ranked in the 44th percentile. He now gets to play in a more pitcher-friendly ballpark and isn't on a team contending for the worst record in baseball. The Marlins look to be a better team than last year and have an exciting pitching staff so should win enough games to make their closer relevant in fantasy. It just remains to be seen if Sulser gets the role or is at least involved in a committee. With Dylan Floro set to miss time to start the season, Anthony Bender was in line for the closer role but Sulser now muddies that. Sulser is worth rostering in fantasy as a speculative add for saves and if he does get the first crack at the closer role, he could find himself with the job all season and has the potential to end up as a top-15 closer.
