Casey Mize 2022 Player Outlook: Needs To Improve K% To Become Reliable Fantasy Option
3 years agoDetroit Tigers pitcher Casey Mize was up-and-down in his first entire season as a starter in the big leagues. The first overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft wasn't dominant last year but flashed upside by owning a 1.74 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and a 7.8 K:9 through five starts in May. Mize didn't finish the year strong, owning a 4.80 ERA in his last 15 innings. Overall, he posted a 3.71 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 118:41 K: BB over 150 1/3 innings in 2021. The first overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft wasn't dominant last year but flashed upside by owning a 1.74 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and a 7.8 K:9 through five starts in May. He needs to strike out more batters to take the next step of becoming a fantasy ace. Mize will look to build on his rookie campaign and increase his strikeout rate as his K% dipped from 23.5% in Double-A to 19.3% last season. Fantasy managers can expect Mize to be more of a streamer in 2022, and Cutter projections are on board with this assessment. Cutter projects the right-hander with an 8-10 record, nine quality starts, 4.24 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 150 strikeouts across 169 innings. Mize needs to improve on a few things before becoming a reliable fantasy starter, but if he can build on his rookie campaign, the 24-year-old could be a late-round steal at his 255 ADP.
