Tylor Megill 2022 Player Outlook: Late-Round Steal If He Secures Team's Final Rotation Spot
3 years agoNew York Mets pitcher Tylor Megill is vying for the team's final rotation spot in Spring Training. With the Mets locking in Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, and Carlos Carrasco as New York's top four starters, Megill is competing with Taijuan Walker to be New York's No. 5 starter. Megill posted a 4.52 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 99 strikeouts over 89 2/3 inning in 2021. The 26-year-old was terrific in the first month of his rookie season, owning a 2.04 ERA and a 27.1 K% over his first 35 1/3 innings. He hit a rookie wall in August. The Mets right-hander was hurt by the long ball, surrendering 2.4 HR:9, and watched his ERA balloon up to 6.55 across his last 45 1/3 frames. Megill added a cutter to the arsenal this offseason, especially to get left-handers out, who batted .315 against him last season. "I wanted something hard and something that goes into lefties so that they can respect the four-seam, said Megill. If I have something hard and in, it's just an advantage for me to get on their hands and allow them to second-guess themselves." If Megill can win the Mets' final rotation spot, he could be a late-round steal in upcoming fantasy drafts. Cutter is on board with this, projecting the right-hander with an 8-6 record, 3.94 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 135 strikeouts over 125 innings. Fantasy managers need to closely monitor this Spring Training battle versus Walker as Megill is worth a late-round dart at his current 311 ADP.
