Carlos Rodon 2022 Player Outlook: A Per-Inning Stud, But Unlikely To Stay On The Field
3 years agoIt was the career-year of career-years for Carlos Rodon in 2021. He finally stayed mostly healthy and was a Cy Young worthy pitcher in his 132.2 innings, posting an elite line of a 2.37 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, a 34.6% K% and a 6.7% BB%. Inning-for-inning, Rodon was one of the best in the game. Despite this, the White Sox chose not to extend him a qualifying offer, which sent him to free agency where the Giants picked him up shortly after the lockout ended. This was a vote of confidence in his health from San Francisco's side, but it still should give us some pause that the White Sox did not even make an offer. No matter how you look at it, you have an incredibly volatile pitcher here. His career-best in innings pitched was 165 back in 2016, and in his seven-year career he has exceeded 100 innings just four times. It was far from a clean bill of health in 2021 either, as he was handled carefully between ominous news about shoulder fatigue. He's still just 29, but his brutal injury history makes him an incredibly risky pick, even at his somewhat affordable ADP of 123.
