Alek Thomas 2022 Outlook: Big Upside With Untapped Raw Power
3 years agoThe Diamondbacks appear stacked with outfield depth but looks can be deceiving. Ketel Marte is expected to move back to the infield which would leave just one outfielder that produced better than average offense in more than 100 ABs (Jordan Luplow) last year. That lack of promise among the existing outfielders means rookies like Thomas could receive significant playing time in 2022. The 21-year-old outfielder spent the bulk of the 2021 season in Double-A where he produced a 134 wRC+ and finally started tapping into his raw power. He ended the season with 34 games in Triple-A where he continued to flash his newfound power and produced a 168 wRC+. Thomas has always been built like a bodybuilder but he's always struggled to get the ball into the air on a consistent basis. He still hit far too many balls on the ground last year but he crushed the balls that he got into the air. He's always been a mature hitter for his age and has an all-fields approach, which helps him hit for a strong average and he takes his fair share of walks. The added power output makes him a much more attractive fantasy target now — although he'll need to make some swing adjustments to get the ball in the air more consistently. Even with 15-20 home runs, though, his strong average and consistent on-base presence could make him a solid fantasy contributor once he secures a MLB role.
