Aaron Ashby 2022 Outlook: Sky-High Potential With Some Risk
3 years agoPitchers have a habit of popping up out of nowhere at times — more so than hitters — simply by adding velocity or polishing a new pitch. Corbin Burnes, now arguably one of the Top 3-5 starters in baseball, was a fourth-round draft pick back in 2016 by the Brewers. Guess where Milwaukee found Ashby? He was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 amateur draft. Back then he was a promising but raw lefty that worked in the 92-93 mph range and could hit 95. Fast-forward to today and Ashby is sitting in the 95-97 mph range and averaged 97 mph. His best pitch has always been his wipeout slider so he now possesses two plus offerings from the left side and has a changeup that is at least average. And we haven't even discussed his 60% ground-ball rate. Along with a power repertoire and the ground-ball tendencies, Ashby also has deception in delivery —although that leads to command/control issues and some reliever risk. Despite that concern, we see a future No. 2 or 3 starter who will slot behind Burnes very nicely. And after posting a 36% strikeout rate in Triple-A and a 29% rate in his first taste of the majors, he could be in line for some key innings for the up-and-coming Brewers in 2022. Even with the risk associated with young pitching, Ashby is an outstanding value with an ADP of 271.
