Cam Newton To Meet With Panthers
3 years agoThe Carolina Panthers plan to meet with free-agent quarterback Cam Newton on Thursday, according to three sources with knowledge of the situation. The 32-year-old has been looking for a landing spot since he was released by the New England Patriots in August. A reunion with Newton could be in the cards with Sam Darnold (shoulder) on Injured Reserve due to a fracture in his right shoulder blade. Backup P.J. Walker is expected to start under center in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals, with the recently signed Matt Barkley backing him up. Newton spent nine seasons with Carolina after they drafted him first overall in 2011. For his rushing ability alone, Newton would likely be an upgrade over Walker, and he'd be worth a pickup in two-QB leagues if he winds up making some starts with Darnold on the shelf.
