49ers Not Prepared For Trey Lance To Start?
3 years agoSan Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance was forced into action in the second half of the Week 4 loss to the Seattle Seahawks when Jimmy Garoppolo injured his calf in the first half. Head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn't ready for the switch and had recently avoided the idea of even getting Lance in more regularly alongside Garoppolo. San Fran hopes Lance is the future of the franchise, but the plan wasn't to play him this soon. Shanahan sounded more committed to Jimmy G recently, but they may have no choice but to start Lance in a Week 5 showdown with the undefeated Arizona Cardinals. The 21-year-old first-rounder threw two touchdowns in relief, but he looked flustered most of the time and took off running seven times for 41 yards. There's clear upside here because of Lance's dual-threat abilities, but he's raw and inexperienced and wouldn't come recommended as a QB1 streamer if he has to make his first career start in Week 5.
