Cornell Powell 2021 Outlook: WR3 Upside at a Discount Price
4 years agoKansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Cornell Powell enters a high powered offense where opportunities might be easier to come by than one would expect. The former Clemson standout was drafted with the 181st pick in the fifth round in this year's NFL draft, after greatly improving his draft stock in the latter half of his final collegiate season. While Powell never caught more than four passes in a game the first six weeks of the season, he erupted for 11 receptions and 105 yards against Boston College in Week 7 and never looked back. Powell became quickly became one of Trevor Lawrence's more reliable targets, averaging 6.5 receptions and 121.7 yards over his final six games. While Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce are locked in as Patrick Mahomes' first two options, it gets shaky after that. The Chiefs let Sammy Watkins walk in free agency, and while Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson, and Byron Pringle have all shown flashes, they've ultimately proven to be unreliable options. Powell does not possess WR1/WR2 upside unless there is an injury to Hill or Kelce, but he could certainly make an impact as a WR3 or flex option. With that being said, with an ADP of 249.90 (430th), Powell should be widely available on the waiver wire and should not be targeted in drafts.
