Martin Maldonado Finalizes One-Year Extension With Astros
4 years agoThe Houston Astros finalized an undisclosed one-year contract extension with catcher Martin Maldonado on Tuesday that will keep him in Houston through 2022 with a vesting option for the 2023 season, according to a source. The Astros traded for Maldonado two years in a row and signed the veteran to a two-year deal before the 2020 season. He started 46 of 60 games behind the dish in 2020 and all but one game in the playoffs. Maldonado was just 3-for-32 with 15 strikeouts entering Tuesday's game, but he's a team leader and is solid behind the plate. The Astros will have both Maldonado and Jason Castro as their catching tandem next year as well. The 34-year-old Maldonado had a .728 OPS with six home runs last year and can be useful in stretches for fantasy managers when his bat heats up.
