Phillies Re-Sign J.T. Realmuto For Five Years
4 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies and catcher J.T. Realmuto agreed to a five-year, $115.5 million deal on Tuesday, according to a source. The contract has the highest average annual value for a catcher in major league history at $23.1 million. Realmuto was an All-Star in 2018 and 2019 and won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award in 2019. He had a 123 OPS+ with 11 home runs in 195 plate appearances in the shortened 2020 season for Philadelphia, also controlling the running game on defense as good as any other catcher in the majors. The 29-year-old former third-round pick of the Marlins has a .278 career batting average with a 111 OPS+. Realmuto's 15.0 Wins Above Replacement ranked first among catchers and 13th among all position players from 2017-19. He should be the first fantasy catcher off the board in 2021 drafts.
