Brian Anderson 2021 Player Outlook: Trending in the Right Direction
4 years agoBrian Anderson has been consistently getting better at the plate since his debut season of 2017. After posting isolated power marks just slightly over .100 in 2017 and 2018, 2020 marks the second season in a row where he's had one over .200. Over the past two seasons, Anderson's power rise has been due to increases in his Statcast metrics, most notably his barrel rate, which in 2020 was a career-best 9.6%. Further adding to the power development, Anderson saw a great increase in pull rate, climbing over 11% to 43% last season. Pulling the ball more usually leads to more power, and his spray chart from last season shows that, with the majority of his home runs going to the pull side. One concerning area from Anderson's 2020 season was that his strikeout rate spiked to 28.8%, by far the worst of his career. It appears that selling out for more power caused him to whiff more, with a whiff rate that was ten percentage points worse than league-average. The power increases are nice and make him a more intriguing fantasy option, but he'll need to manage the strikeout rate for him to become a more complete hitter. Overall, Anderson is a good late-round option at third base, as he should accumulate a good amount of counting stats while hitting the in the middle of the Miami order.
