4 years agoAtlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka's 2020 season lasted just three starts after suffering a torn Achilles in August. Although the Braves have yet to provide a timetable for his return, Soroka did begin throwing again in early January, so he should at least be able to partake in some sort of spring training. Opening Day will be eight months after his injury, so even if Soroka isn't ready for the first game of the season, he shouldn't be far off. When Soroka is back on the mound, he will slot into an impressive rotation and will look to get back to the 2019 version of himself when he put up a 13-4 record over 29 starts and 174.2 innings with a 2.68 ERA and 1.111 WHIP in his first full season in the majors. The underlying numbers did raise some concerns over Soroka's ability to repeat that, as he also had a 4.28 SIERA and 3.85 xFIP. Soroka will likely continue that trend given his propensity to induce lots of weak contact rather than miss bats, as his career 19.6% strikeout rate has translated into 171 strikeouts in 214 innings. Soroka's current ADP is around 170, and even though a lack of strikeouts will limit his upside, the Braves offense will help him accumulate wins and his ERA and WHIP will be useful, providing draft value even if he misses the first month of the season.
