Joe Musgrove 2021 Fantasy Outlook: Potential Breakout Candidate With Move To SD
4 years agoRight-handed starting pitcher Joe Musgrove only managed 39 2/3 innings in 2020 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he did come out as a different pitcher than what we have seen in the past. He dropped his four-seamer usage significantly and threw more curveballs. This made him a really hard-to-predict pitcher, as he threw five different pitches and had four that he would use in almost any count. Musgrove reaped the benefits of this change in the short sample size of 2020, posting a brilliant 33% strikeout rate. His walk rate came up as well, but not to a scary level (9.6%), and the increased curveball usage led to a higher ground-ball rate as well (48.4%). Musgrove certainly has swing-and-miss stuff and room for growth with his impressive pitch arsenal, and he became much more attractive to fantasy managers when he was traded to the San Diego Padres. Musgrove is a potential breakout candidate for 2021 and is someone to add to your watch list when your drafts begin.
