Tracy Walker 2020 Outlook: Legitimate Top Safety Option
5 years agoDetroit Lions safety Tracy Walker emerged in a big way in 2019 after being a lightly-used backup his rookie year. Walker didn't start a single game and barely played a quarter of the team's defensive snaps his first season. It was a whole different story as a second-year player, as he led the team with 103 combined tackles despite missing three games due to injury. He wound up with the third-highest tackle total among all defensive backs with 82 solo stops. The turnovers weren't there to boost his value, however, as he picked off just one pass and didn't recover any fumbles.
Despite the lack of big plays, Walker's role as the last line of defense in Detroit's sieve-like defense remains. The team lost its other starting safety and second-leading tackler, Tavon Wilson, replacing him with Duron Harmon. This could lead to even bigger tackle totals for Walker, who now looks to be a solid top-five DB pick in IDP leagues on a team that should funnel plenty of offensive skill players his way all year long.
