Angels Targeting Mid-May For Shohei Ohtani's Pitching Return
5 years agoLos Angeles Angels designated hitter/starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani (elbow) will open the 2020 season as the team's designated hitter, according to general manager Billy Eppler. The Angels are targeting a mid-May return for Ohtani on the mound after he missed all of the 2019 season as a pitcher after having Tommy John surgery. The new MLB rules will allow the Japanese two-way star to rehab his arm while remaining on the major league roster. The 25-year-old is plenty valuable as a hitter, as he's batted .286/.351/.532 with 40 home runs, 123 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 210 games in his two seasons, but he'll obviously come with more risk as a pitcher in 2020 with the late start.
