David Price 2020 Outlook: Veteran Lefty Not In Full Decline Yet
4 years agoUPDATE: David Price has opted out of the 2020 season. David Price had a statistically polarizing season in 2019 as his year was cut short due to a cyst on his pitching wrist. Throwing just 4.2 IP after the calendar flipped to August, the southpaw finished the season sporting an ERA above 4.00 for the first time (4.28), while his 1.31 WHIP proved to be his highest mark since his rookie campaign in 2009. Price’s 3.85 SIERA and 3.62 FIP suggest his results shouldn’t have suffered this much, especially with the fact he produced a career-high 28.0% K-rate. Price achieved this by upping the usage of his four-seamer by over 14% from 2018 while throwing his sinker with 7% less frequency. He still managed to keep his fly-ball rate (23.1%) to a four-year low by doing this, but it was countered by a lifetime-low 14.4% HR/FB. Price underwent surgery in September to remove the cyst and is scheduled to be fully healthy for spring training for his fresh start with the Dodgers. The move to the NL West will undoubtedly help keep his ratios down in a more pitcher-friendly division, as well as a more favorable home ballpark. Unlike the Red Sox, the Dodgers have plenty of depth on their staff so they won't rely on Price to carry the rotation, and they can pace out his starts to keep him healthy. He is primed to thrive in this environment and makes a potential bargain pick at his current 192 ADP, which is sure to go up.
