Yasmani Grandal 2020 Outlook: Getting Better With Age
5 years agoChicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is leaving the National League for the first time in his eight-year MLB career after a successful one-year stint in Milwaukee. Grandal reached career highs in all triple-crown categories with 28 HR, 77 RBI, and a .246 AVG. His .380 OBP was most encouraging, as he finished fourth in the majors with 109 walks. The most valuable part of his profile from a fantasy standpoint might be the least exciting - games played. Grandal led all backstops with 153 games and made 632 plate appearances. At a position that sees many a timeshare and few catchers who play anything close to a full season, Grandal was a staple of successful teams.
The move to Chicago shouldn't hurt his value in any way, as they are likely to stick him in the middle of the lineup, possibly clean-up, in a predominantly right-handed offense. With young stars like Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jimenez, and Luis Robert now buoyed by new additions Edwin Encarnacion, Nomar Mazara, and Grandal, there could be plenty of RBI opportunities to go around. Grandal is a lock as a top-five catcher, typically taken third after Gary Sanchez and J.T. Realmuto. It's not popular to strike early at catcher, but if you want to secure consistency at the position, Grandal is a great option. You will have to grab him within the top 100 overall players though, as his ADP currently sits at 98.
