Odubel Herrera Will Have To Earn Roster Spot
5 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera, who was suspended for 85 games last summer for a domestic-violence incident, must earn his spot on the roster next spring training, according to general manager Matt Klentak. Scott Kingery, Adam Haseley and Roman Quinn are all options to start in center field over Herrera, and the Phillies could also add another outfielder on the open market. “Whereas Odubel had been the everyday center fielder for a handful of seasons, now all of a sudden there’s more of a competition there so the landscape has changed,” Klentak said. “He’s an option for us.” The Phils could also try to trade Herrera or simply release him and pay the remaining $21 million on his contract. Before his suspension, Herrera had been benched in favor of Kingery after hitting .222 with a .629 OPS in 39 games. He won't be on the redraft radar entering spring drafts.
