Jonnu Smith 2019 Outlook: Walker is the Key
6 years agoIf Delanie Walker is back and healthy then Jonnu Smith has no value in fantasy leagues. This may seem like a simple statement. It is. But it’s also a true statement.
Even with Walker out for the season in 2018, Jonnu Smith was only able to catch 20 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Even in a time of terrible tight end play this is bad for a starting tight end. With Walker now back Smith is likely back to being irrelevant for the Titans.
With all the weapons the fantasy world wants Mariota to make a star and a limited number of pass attempts to do it, Smith will be the first to go bye-bye. Corey Davis is going to be the main target in the passing game. Follow that closely with rookie A.J. Brown and Adam Humphriesand you see where this is going. Now that Walker is back, we have to assume he will again be the security blanket for Marcus Mariota as he has been in past seasons. Throw in Derrick Henry looking to make his own mark and the tap is dry.
Smith can be an in-season add if Walker is unable to come back healthy. But based on last seasons numbers in the same situation he is not a very interesting one. When looking for a secondary tight end who might pop, a player like Dallas Goedert on the Eagles is the type of player to look for. The team loves to use two tight end sets and he will not rely on an injury to Zach Ertz to provide fantasy numbers. But in a low-volume pass attack like Tennessee, you should not want to go anywhere close to Smith for 2019, especially as he remains on the PUP in training camp right now.
