Jamaal Williams 2019 Player Outlook: Good as a Handcuff, Not As A Starter
6 years agoWilliams was afforded opportunities to establish himself as Green Bay’s best back in each of the past two seasons and failed to prove he can be Aaron Rodgers’ top tailback on a consistent basis. Williams has not shown that he has the speed or escapability to be a starting RB in the NFL. He has only averaged 3.7 yards per carry on 274 career rushing attempts and has never had a run of more than 25 yards. While Williams is serviceable as a backup back and as a pass catcher out of the backfield (52 receptions for 472 yards in two years), we all know that Aaron Jones is the clear-cut No. 1 RB in Cheesehead Country. Jones averaged 5.5 YPC behind the same offensive line Williams could not crack four yards per carry with and is easily the more explosive runner of the two. Despite his shortcomings, Williams will start the season as one of the most valuable handcuffs in fantasy football because Jones has missed eight games over his first two seasons due to injury and suspension. If you draft Jones you should certainly draft Williams as insurance, or if you do not get/own Jones then pick up Williams in the late rounds and hope Jones does not last the season.
