Hayden Hurst 2019 Outlook: Tale of Two Tight Ends
6 years agoWith the 25th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens selected Hayden Hurst, tight end from the University of South Carolina. With these words, the excitement for Hurst to play with Joe Flacco in Baltimore became overwhelming. The end result was definitely underwhelming.
In 12 games as a rookie, Hurst had a total of 13 receptions for 163 yards and one touchdown. That's for the entire season. His athletic ability was undermined by an early foot injury which he was unable to overcome and Mark Andrews became the rookie tight end to own for the Ravens. This was until Lamar Jackson became the quarterback. At this point, like with the rest of the team, no receiver was truly valuable.
Coming into 2019, fantasy owners are higher on Andrews then they are Hurst. Andrews was able to build a rapport with Jackson over the second half of the season while Hurst continued to play catch-up. But he has added 20 pounds of muscle this offseason and still has a first-round pedigree, so he is not going away. This said, Flacco is now in Denver and we really don’t know what to expect in year two of the Lamar Jackson experiment. While Andrews is a safer draft pick, neither one should be drafted as a starter right now. Hurst is at best a TE2 in 14-team leagues with upside for more but the floor remains too low to trust.
