Mike Gesicki 2019 Outlook: Will His Second Year Go Better Than His First?
6 years agoLast year wasn’t a great rookie campaign for Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki, who caught 22 passes for 202 yards, but tight end is one of the positions where rookies often struggle to make an impact. Can Gesicki get things going in his second NFL season? There’s a lot of uncertainty in Miami, with the quarterback position a battle between veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and the underwhelming Josh Rosen, and the team’s receiving corps made up of a lot of unproven players, but Gesicki shouldn’t have much trouble beating out Dwayne Allen to be the team’s top tight end. From there, how you feel about Gesicki depends on how you feel about the Dolphins, but one encouraging sign is that the team’s brought in a coaching staff with a lot of Patriots roots, a team that’s shown themselves very capable of getting the tight end position involved. Gesicki is no Rob Gronkowski, but there’s a reason he was highly-touted out of college, and his upside this season is a fantasy finish at the tail of the TE1 tier. More likely, though, is that Gesicki shows incremental improvements over the course of the year and becomes a streamable but ultimately inconsistent option due to Miami’s overall struggles, leading to a potential breakout campaign in 2020.
