Carlos Hyde 2019 Outlook: Valuable Handcuff This Offseason
5 years agoHouston Texans running back Carlos Hyde has been thrust into an interesting situation this year, after being traded to Houston following the preseason. Hyde has been a highly effective running in previous seasons but started to slow down last season, ending the season with a lowly 3.3 yards per rushing attempt. Hyde started his season with the Cleveland Browns where he scored five touchdowns in six games, before moving to the Jaguars and being largely disappointing. Hyde should now have a great shot at being both the short-yardage/goal-line back and potentially even the first and second-down back. Duke Johnson is his only competition and the NFL has seemingly made it clear they do not see him as a three-down back who can shoulder the load. However, Hyde will still lose out on valuable work to Johnson during the season and this should temper expectations. If you have already drafted Hyde has become a value to you, as his increase in role should improve his opportunity to score regular fantasy points. If you are drafting in the next few days then Hyde's value will be a little unknown. The seventh of eight round as an RB4 type seems the right value, but with this situation in flux, it will be a case of reading the draft room and striking when the time is right.
