Trey Mancini 2019 Outlook: Safe Option Lacking Upside
6 years agoTrey Mancini came up playing first base, but has played left field for an Orioles team who seemingly collected 1B/DH types like they were going out of stock. Unfortunately, while playing left field on April 20, 2018, Mancini slid for a ball and ended up hitting his knee against the brick wall under the padding. Through April 20, he was batting .284 with a .771 OPS. In May, June and July, he batted .192, .233 and .203 with OPSs of .597, .674 and .623. After the all-star break, he bounced back to his early season numbers, batting .276 with a .792 OPS. He finished with a .245 average and 24 homers. Given the seeming correlation between his performance over the year and the knee issue, it is reasonable to expect him to return to a .280 average with at least 25 home runs. Due to an expectedly poor lineup, he will not contribute much run production and he does not steal bases. Mancini is currently being drafted around the 230th overall and our rankers have him closer to 200th. Given the expected lineup for the Orioles and Mancini’s lack of upside, this writer is slightly less optimistic than our rankers. He is a somewhat safe, but unexciting, fantasy option.
