Josh Hader 2019 Outlook: Best Non-Closer Reliever In Game
6 years agoFantasy owners of Milwaukee Brewers reliever Josh Hader were very frustrated at the start of the 2018 season but by the end of the year had endless joy. Many owners were expecting, or at least hoping, the Brewers would stretch Hader out to be a starter as the year started, but instead they had anxiety seeing him thrown into the bullpen. 143 strikeouts with six wins, 12 saves, 21 holds, and a 2.43 ERA has a way of changing the mood very quickly. Not only that, Hader led the league in strikeout percentage (46.7%) as well as relief innings (81.1). While we can’t blindly expect an even more dominating performance in 2019, there is nothing in his profile that suggests he isn’t capable of repeating the performance. The main question will be regarding his usage. The Brewers bullpen is quite crowded on the backend with guys that could close. Surely, Hader’s stuff deserves an opportunity but likely he will be used as he was in 2018, to lock down key innings of the game. Regardless of when Hader steps on the mound during a game, he will be very valuable. He is the 10th ranked reliever, which is quite impressive considering he doesn’t have a solidified closer’s job. This is a testament to not only the belief in Hader, but also the change in strategy in acquiring quality relievers to keep the ratios down. An ADP of 97 puts him near the eighth round which is good value for such a force.
