Yasmani Grandal 2019 Outlook: What Does Guy Have To Do?
6 years agoThe 2018 version of Yasmani Grandal seemed to surprise owners as he returned strong value relative to his draft spot. His 24 home runs were right in line with his 27 from 2016 and 22 from 2017. As a catcher, Grandal’s power was largely unappreciated because the Dodgers gave him regular rest, but his 162-game average for the last three years has been 29.9 HR, 67 runs, 80 RBI. When he plays, Grandal provides strong production. Unfortunately, he’s averaged only 131 games the last three years, which has eaten into his value by a fair margin. On the other hand, there are plenty of other catchers, including Perez, Ramos, Posey, and Contreras, who are going off the board before Grandal. Consequently, he should still be available late in the second half of most drafts. Grandal’s move the to the Brewers may hurt his value. While the Brewer's offense may not be as good as the 2018 Dodgers, the still some potent bats, and Grandal should see offensive support unless he gets buried at the bottom of the batting order. Grandal is currently being drafted in the 12th round.
