Randal Grichuk 2019 Outlook: Late-Round Power Bargain
6 years agoIt was a bit of an adjustment period for Randal Grichuk in his debut season with the Toronto Blue Jays. After missing the entire month of May with a knee sprain, Grichuk capped his year with a career-high 25 HR. You can expect the pop in his bat to continue as his power metrics have kept a year-to-year consistency. The power numbers are nice, but it comes with a sacrifice in the AVG and OBP categories. His underwhelming .301 OBP in 2018 was a career-best, and his bland .245 mark was his highest since he began being a full-time player in 2015. His woes as a below-average hitter are likely to continue in 2019 as he’s among the league-worst in Contact% (70.4%) and SwStr% (15.0%).
Grichuk has a checkered injury history and has yet to play in 132 games in a season, and the Blue Jays are also in rebuild mode, so it is possible he loses playing time to Anthony Alford or Billy McKinney. As he’ll continue to produce the power numbers though, it'll be difficult to take this type of contribution out of the lineup. Projected to bat in the middle of the order, opportunities for RBI will also come for the 27-year-old. His current ADP of 255 is a fair price, and if you’re looking for an RBI and HR contributor to fill out your squad late in drafts in deep leagues, it’ll be hard to find many better options at much cheaper prices.
