Tommy Pham 2019 Outlook: Intriguing Power-Speed Player Set to Exceed ADP
6 years agoDespite struggling the first part of the year in St. Louis, outfielder Tommy Pham had himself a nice season in 2018. After being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, Pham hit for a .343/.448/.622 slash line, with an amazing 1.071 OPS, seven home runs, 22 RBI, and five steals in just 143 at-bats. For the year, Pham hit .275/.367/.464 with 21 home runs, 63 RBI, 15 stolen bases, and 102 runs scored. His .367 OBP ranked 21st among qualified hitters, and he impressively ranked fourth in the MLB with a 48.5% hard-hit percentage. Though Pham didn’t reach the 20 HR/20 SB plateau, he was close and is among the 10-15 players in the league with the demonstrated ability to do so (he hit 23 home runs and stole 25 bases in 2017). His switch to Tropicana Field isn’t a positive one and the Rays don’t exactly have a loaded lineup, but it’s worth noting that Tropicana Field ranked 11th in “Park Factor” for triples and Pham hit six of them last season. Another factor that doesn’t get enough publicity - Pham is in the last year of his contract and will be playing with some added motivation heading into free agency. Pham is being drafted with the 59th pick on average and is ranked 67th overall on RotoBaller. Expect him to exceed value due to his power-speed combination that compares favorably to the players being drafted around him.
