Alex Bregman 2019 Outlook: 1st Round Value With MVP Potential
6 years agoAlex Bregman, the hard-hitting third baseman for the Houston Astros, may be slightly undervalued heading into the 2019 fantasy baseball season. His 2018 draft stock was inflated due to his World Series heroics in 2017, but he hit just .182 in the 2018 ALCS and that may have diminished the amazing overall season he put together (finished 5th in AL MVP voting). He hit for a .286/.394/.532 slash line, with his .926 OPS ranking 7th among qualified hitters. He hit 31 home runs, 103 RBI (12th among qualified hitters), 105 runs scored (9th), and was 10/14 on stolen base attempts. He had a 1.13 BB/K ratio (3rd), .246 ISO (16th), 51.4 offensive WAR (4th), .396 wOBA (5th), and 157 wRC+ (5th). These are all elite numbers, and there are no reasons to believe he will slow down. Bregman is entering just his third full season on the MLB-level, as he broke in with the Astros in 2016 but had just 217 plate appearances. He puts the ball in play consistently but also has a great eye at the plate, hits for average and power, and has shown he can make an impact stealing bases. Add in the fact that he hits at the top of one of the very best lineups in the MLB - the sky is the limit for the 24-year-old phenom. He’s being drafted 11th overall on average while RotoBaller has him at 15th overall. Draft Bregman with confidence in the middle-to-late-first round and don’t look back.
