Carlos Correa 2019 Outlook: Can He Stay Healthy?
6 years agoCarlos Correa burst onto the scene as a fresh-faced 20-year-old in 2015, and while he’s still a fresh-faced 24-year-old going into 2019, injuries have played a huge factor in his lack of development. 2018 was a step in the wrong direction for Correa, since he not only dealt with lingering back soreness all season, he didn’t play well when on the field. Whether Correa was ever fully healthy in 2018 is debatable, but a .239 average and .723 OPS suggest he wasn’t at 100% when active. Correa’s offseason started with more health issues, as he underwent surgery to repair a deviated septum. According to Correa, the surgery will help him breath better when running the bases, but it won’t have much of an impact if he puts up another measly .323 OBP. There is plenty of talent in this profile, as evidenced by the .941 OPS he had in 2017, but there is considerable risk in drafting Correa as well. His injuries and inconsistencies put him behind the top-tier shortstops such as Francisco Lindor and Manny Machado, but a healthy Correa could present a nice value at his current ADP of 45. His owners just need to have a contingency plan in case of injury or poor performance.
