Vance McDonald 2018 Player Outlook: Breakout Tight End Candidate
6 years agoPittsburgh Steelers tight end Vance McDonald was a last-minute addition to the team during training camp in 2017 after a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. The veteran tight end got off to a slow start with his new team, catching just 14 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown during the regular season. When the playoffs came around, however, McDonald showed just what he is capable of as he went off for 10 catches and 112 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round. McDonald split snaps with Jesse James last season but he is expected to occupy the starting role for Pittsburgh in 2018. Even if McDonald does lead Pittsburgh tight ends in targets this season, he will still be the fourth option at best in the passing game after Antonio Brown, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Le'Veon Bell. McDonald should be drafted as a low-end TE2 with upside this season.
