Kenyan Drake 2018 Outlook: Lead Dog In A Crowded Backfield
6 years agoKenyan Drake exploded onto the NFL scene in his second NFL season for the Miami Dolphins following the Jay Ajayi trade to the Philadelphia Eagles. In the final five games of the season, Drake carried the ball 91 times for 444 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 17 passes for an additional 150 yards. The dual-threat running back seemed to have his hands fully grasped on the reins of the Dolphins backfield, but management made some strange moves this offseason that may point to an RBBC if Drake starts the season slow.
The Dolphins signed veteran Frank Gore to a contract and then they drafted Arizona State's Kalen Ballage in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Drake should still be the lead back when the season begins, but Gore has been and always will be a reliable runner and Ballage was a beast at the collegiate level. Drake is currently being drafted in the late-third round/early-fourth round. There's definitely the potential that he maintains his status as the lead back if he starts the season how he ended last year, but there's a lot of moving pieces to his situation on the Dolphins that could make a selection of him that early a risky one.
