Travis Kelce 2018 Outlook: History In The Making
6 years agoKansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce could give Tony Gonzalez a run for his money as the best tight end in franchise history, but Kelce could accomplish a record that Gonzalez never accomplished in his illustrious career. In 2018, Kelce will have a chance to be the second tight end in NFL history to have three consecutive seasons of 1,000 receiving yards. Kelce would join Greg Olsen who accomplished the feat from 2014-2016. Kelce has the most receiving yards among all tight ends in the past two seasons combined.
This year, the Chiefs will have a new quarterback under-center with Patrick Mahomes taking over the offense from Alex Smith, who has departed to Washington. Mahomes will air it out more than Smith, so Kelce may not be as depended on in the offense, especially with the team also acquiring wide receiver Sammy Watkins in the off-season as well. Kelce will still be important to the offense, but may not be the beneficiary of a team-high 122 targets again.
There can be a case made to draft Kelce over Gronkowski, especially since Kelce has missed just one game over the last four seasons, but when it comes to quarterback play, Gronkowski gets the slight advantage. Look for Kelce to go in the late-third round, and definitely snag him if he slips to the fifth round.
