Prospects Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Urias Sent To Minors
7 years agoTwo top San Diego Padres prospects were reassigned to minor league camp on Tuesday. Baseball's No. 2 ranked shortstop, Fernando Tatis Jr. (No. 8 overall), and No. 2 rated second baseman Luis Urias (36th overall) will continue their development away from the majors. Both youngsters were holding their own in spring training, but the moves were expected. Tatis, 19, was 9-for-32 (.281) with a homer, eight RBI and three steals prior to the demotion. Urias, 20, hit .286 in 28 at-bats with an .858 OPS. It is conceivable both players eventually make their major league debuts this season. With Tatis' departure, third baseman Christian Villanueva should continue getting acclimated to backing up shortstop Freddy Galvis. Urias' absence will magnify the three-way battle at second base between Carlos Asuaje, Cory Spangenberg and Jose Pirela. Manager Andy Green has indicated it is unlikely the Padres will keep both Asuaje and Spangenberg.
