Franchy Cordero Capitalizing On Opportunities
7 years agoSan Diego Padres outfielder Franchy Cordero is forcing his way into San Diego's roster discussions with a sizzling spring training. After a 1.052 OPS second half in Triple-A followed up by winning the Dominican Winter League MVP, Cordero is hitting .423 with two homers through 26 spring at-bats. His speed, rocket arm, ability to play all three outfield positions and left-handed bat is differentiating himself from incumbent left fielders Hunter Renfroe and Jose Pirela. By developing consistency at the plate (44 percent strikeout rate during his 2017 call-up), manager Andy Green anticipates 350 to 400 at-bats for Cordero in a platoon role. If Pirela sees starts at second, Cordero could spell Renfroe against righties and occasionally fill in for Manuel Margot and Wil Myers. With the Padres likely to keep five outfielders, Cordero seemingly has a substantial leg up on Travis Jankowski and Matt Szczur.
