Matt Moore Not Worth The Risk
7 years agoFew pitchers had a worse 2017 than Texas Rangers starting pitcher Matt Moore. After being acquired from the Rays, the lefty rewarded the Giants with a disastrous 6-15 record with a 5.52 ERA on 174.1 innings. The 28-year old lost significant velocity on his fastball and appeared to pitch to contact more than in the past, neutralizing his ability to produce strikeouts. Unfortunately, the change in approach did not help in any way, as Moore also gave up more walks and somehow gave up more home runs than in 2016. The former top prospect was traded in December to Texas and, unfortunately for his new club, Moore might be even worse in 2018. As bad as his season totals look, he threw an astonishing 7.22 ERA away from the offense-suppressing confines of AT&T Park. Players appear to be paying for the starter’s former prospect status as his current ADP sits at 184th overall, but the decline in skills prove that this approach is a massive mistake. Unfortunately, the chance that Moore finds his form in Texas is remote at best, and wise players should consider him nearly undraftable.
