Zack Greinke Is Still A Top-10 SP
7 years agoAt 34 years old, Zack Greinke has plenty of mileage on his arm; he has averaged 175 innings a year for 14 years. In 2017, Greinke ranked top-10 in earned run average (3.20) amongst starting pitchers with more than 150 innings. He also surpassed 200 strikeouts for the fifth time in the last seven years. While Greinke performed better in 2017 than he did in 2016, there are some underlying stats that are quite similar. As was the case in 2016, his performance declined in the second half of the year. Greinke’s ERA worsened from 2.86 to 3.66. Also, his strikeout to base on balls percentage dropped from 23.6 to 18. Greinke’s average fastball gradually slows every year as well, but his pitch selection is what makes him effective despite any velocity loss. The humidor at Chase Field will benefit Greinke, allowing him to grip the ball better and reduce the amount of effort Greinke has to put into each start, ensuring elite stats for yet another year. Greinke is still a top-10 starting pitcher and can be drafted around the fourth or fifth round. If your dynasty team can win now, then keep Greinke and enjoy the steady production. If your team is not competitive this year, trade Greinke to get as much value as possible, as he is still an elite starter.
