Adrian Gonzalez Expects To Be Everyday First Baseman For Mets
7 years agoAfter the New York Mets called up top prospect Dominic Smith to man first base in August of 2017, the assumption was that Smith would be the team’s primary player at the position moving forward. A terrible September, however, threw that assumption out the window. The Mets went out and signed first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who expects to be starting everyday. Gonzalez can’t be worse than he was during his injury-riddled 2017, but that’s not saying much. He slashed .242/.287/.355 across only 252 plate appearances due to injury and being replaced by outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger while with the Dodgers. It was only two years ago that Gonzalez was still putting up OPS’ above .800, so it’s possible he returns to that level – but we wouldn’t bet on it. He’s a nice player to take a flier on late in drafts, but chances are he’ll be replaceable via free agency.
