Dinelson Lamet Will Pile Up Strikeouts
7 years agoDinelson Lamet projects as the number two starter in San Diego for 2018 and the team’s most interesting SP in real and fantasy baseball. Debuting last season, the 25-year old Lamet went 7-8 in 21 starts with a 4.57 ERA and 1.24 WHIP; while those numbers are not great his 10.94 K:9 ranked 9th amongst pitchers with over 100 innings. There’s plenty to be excited about with a mid-90s fastball and an above-average slider. On the flipside, Lamet was mostly a two-pitch pony and his changeup was obliterated the few times it was thrown (-3.93 wCH/C). Lamet will need to develop his arsenal otherwise the high 14.8% HR:FB ratio could persist. Accordingly, consistency was also an issue. He allowed two or fewer runs in 12 starts last season, but allowed at least five in five starts, his impressive strikeout numbers were also tempered by a 45.8% Zone%. In other words, he’s a raw prospect and owners should prepare for bumps in 2018. Regardless, the organization appears bullish on Lamet and he’ll likely have a long leash to figure things out. If healthy, Lamet should log around 30 starts in 2018 and a downtick in walks could result in steady three-category contribution. His current 209 ADP makes him a worthwhile late-round sleeper.
