Cody Allen Looks for Another 30+ Save Season
7 years agoCleveland Indians closer Cody Allen will enter 2018 looking for his fourth consecutive season with 30 or more saves. Allen had a mostly solid 2017, posting 30 saves to go with a 2.94 ERA. He improved on his strikeout rate from the previous year, posting a strong 12.30 K/9, and posted a significantly lower walk rate (2.81 BB/9) than he had ever previously posted. Allen did go through some rough patches and even saw Andrew Miller take over as closer for a temporary period. The presence of an elite reliever like Miller always makes Allen's spot as closer slightly tentative, even though the team has repeatedly said (and rightly so) that they prefer having Miller in a setup role. Allen will enter 2018 as the closer and should have a decent rope, but it's not unreasonable to think another rough patch or two could swap Miller into the role for a longer period this time around.
